Freshman and Transfer Admissions Requirements
Freshman Admission
1. Cumulative GPA of 2.25 or higher in recommended coursework
2. Composite ACT of 19 or higher, SAT verbal of 450 or higher and SAT math of 450 or higher
3. Rank in top half of graduating class Freshman applicants are those who will have completed high school before the first term of enrollment and who have never been enrolled full-time at any institution of higher education.
Candidates seeking consideration for Freshman Admission should successfully complete the following credits prior to high school graduation:
4 English
2 math, including at least one course in algebra
2 sciences, including one lab course
2 social sciences, including one history
4 additional academic credits chosen from foreign language, math, science, or social studies
Electives to satisfy state graduation requirements credit totals In addition, any student who does not submit an ACT math subscore of 25 or higher MUST meet the General Education requirements (Goal II) by taking an approved math course.

Home Schooled Applicants
All home schooled students must submit an official transcript of all high school coursework completed and SAT or ACT score reports. If the student cannot submit transcripts from an approved home schooling association or documentation which verifies official registration of the student with a local school system, then the applicant must submit GED scores. The home schooled student seeking freshman admission must meet regular requirements for admission to be considered for acceptance to the College. In order to comply with the State Department of Education’s Ability to Benefit measures, all home schooled students must submit either ACT scores or GED results prior to enrollment and administration of federal student aid.
Admission to Developmental Education
Students who do not meet the Freshman Admissions requirements may be considered for admission to the College under the developmental education program. Students with ACT scores of 18 or below in English, Math or Reading or SAT scores of 440 or below in Verbal or 440 or below in Math will be required to take developmental classes or pass a placement exam.
Admission Based on GED Diploma
Applicants will be considered who have completed two or more years of high school and who have made a satisfactory score on the General Education Development Test. Applicant’s high school class must have graduated. Applicants must submit an application for admission, high school
transcript(s) showing all work attempted, and a non-refundable $25.00 application fee.
Transfer Admission
1. Applicants must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher in coursework which is transferable to Carson-Newman College.
2. Applicant must be in good academic and disciplinary standing at current institution.
3. Transfer students who do not submit an ACT math subscore of 25 or who have not taken the equivalent to Carson-Newman MATH 107 must meet the General Education requirements (Goal II) by taking an approved math course.
