Benson Named Men's Basketball Assistant Coach

Former University of Tennessee assistant and Carson-Newman alum Chuck Benson has agreed to join the Eagles men's basketball program as an assistant coach on head coach Dale Clayton's staff.

"I am very excited about Coach Benson's decision to join our coaching staff here at Carson-Newman," Coach Clayton said. "As an alumnus, he brings great knowledge about Carson-Newman and our program with him. To be able to hire a coach with Chuck's experience is very rare at the Division II level. He is a perfect fit for our program and will do a great job handling the team when I am required to be off campus. He will be a blessing to our program."

Benson earned a bachelor's degree in history from C-N and began his coaching career as the varsity boys coach at Covenant Academy in Morristown. He was also an assistant at Lincoln Memorial for the 1992 season. Benson returned to Jefferson City in '92 to be an assistant on Coach Clayton's staff for the 1993 season. Benson then joined Tennessee's staff in 1993 and served as an assistant coach and administrative assistant until 1996. He became the head coach of NAIA member Martin Methodist College and compiled a 137-95 record from 1996 through 2003. Last season, he served as the director of basketball operations for UNC Charlotte. Benson has coached four All-American players and been a part of three NIT (National Invitation Tournament) squads.
